During July 2012 I made a visit to the Hawke River Outfitters camp in Labrador and had a wonderful week. I have fished for Atlantic salmon in the UK , Norway and Newfoundland over the past forty five years but this was the best fishing experience ever. Miles of untouched water full of fresh run fish that would readily take surface flies. Camp guides and staff are excellent and nothing was too much trouble. I can highly recommend the Hawke experience.

The Hawke River is likely the most pristine and untouched river I have ever fished. There is no wilderness more pure than the Hawke drainage. The runs of salmon that enter this system are impressive. My week was one with unusually low water conditions and even still the river had many grilse in its deeper pools with larger salmon mixed in. When the rain began it was amazing how many fish began moving into the system... truly a sign of a run of fish as healthy as it has ever been. In this day and age, such a magical place is very rare. If you are looking for an intimate small river experience with chances of catching many ocean fresh fish on flies, the Hawke is the place for you.

Fishing on the Hawke River has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had with regards to salmon fishing. Every morning is the start of a new adventure with different areas of the river to explore, the opportunity to take some short hikes, and the companionship of a tight group of fishermen to enjoy the experience with. The river is also full of great salmon both large and small that put up a great fight! I would recommend the Hawke River to any angler that is serious about fishing for Atlantic salmon.

The lodge and accommodations are comfortable and clean, and the food is hearty and delicious.

The salmon are fresh from the sea and eager to take a fly, whether it be a wet or dry offering, and the river has a large run. There are also large trout lurking in several pools, ready to pounce on the poor salmon parr that you release.

The Hawke River camp offers a true wilderness adventure for the angler. Having fished for Atlantic Salmon throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland, and? Labrador I can state that the Hawke is the "wildest" most remote destination I have experienced. Bears, moose, and wolves are as common to see as the beavers, otters and hares, and there are salmon too!

I am often questioned on the quality of the fishery. I have pursued these fish for over 25 years in all Canadian Provinces as well as Scotland. I continue to return to the Hawke for consistent angling opportunity, but for me the real draw is the chance to walk in our ancestor’s shoes and fish in unspoiled waters as they once did…this place is magical!!!

Hawke River is a true wilderness fishing experience. It’s difficult for Urban dwellers to imagine that places still exist where Wolves, Bears and Moose are common; clean air and water are abundant; and angling expectations are regularly exceeded!
